There is a new movement in the perfume industry that excites both perfume experts and enthusiasts alike: molecular perfumes. These unique creations break with traditional fragrance compositions and offer an individual scent experience that differs from classic perfumes. But what makes them so special?

What makes molecular perfumes unique is their ability to react with the individual skin chemistry of the wearer. This causes the scent to be perceived differently by each person. This individuality makes molecular perfumes so fascinating and personal.

Fragrances in conventional perfumes

Conventional perfumes mainly contain scents from essential oils extracted from flowers, bark, leaves, fruits, herbs, or woods. Often, fragrance compounds like geraniol, linalool, eugenol, or coumarin are extracted from these essential oils. These substances naturally occur in essential oils but can also be synthetically produced (nature-identical fragrances). There are also some aldehydes like decanal, undecanal, and dodecanal, which occur in essential oils and were made famous by the perfume Chanel Nº 5.

Fragrance molecules as building blocks of molecular perfumes

Synthetic fragrance molecules form the basis of a molecular perfume. These are also called fully synthetic fragrances because they do not occur naturally in pure form.

A well-known example is Iso E Super, developed by perfumer Geza Schön. The scent of this molecule is described as skin-like, slightly cedarwood, sweet, or warm. Besides Iso E Super, there are molecules like Ambroxan, whose smell resembles a gentle version of ambergris, and Cashmeran, which smells vanilla-like, spicy, fruity, balsamic, or chypre-like. Additionally, synthetically produced aldehydes such as Hydroxycitronellal, which smells sweet and floral, also count as fragrance molecules.

What types of molecular perfumes are there?

With molecular perfumes, you can distinguish between two types: those made exclusively of synthetic fragrance molecules alongside alcohol and water, and those that contain both natural scents from essential oils or aldehydes as well as additional synthetic molecules.

Classic Molecular Fragrances

Pure molecule fragrances, consisting only of alcohol, water, and one or more synthetic fragrance molecules like Iso E Super, Ambroxan, or Cashmeran, do not have a classic fragrance pyramid with top, heart, and base notes. They often feel minimalist and close to the skin. Still, the scent of a classic molecule perfume can vary throughout the day, with certain accords being perceived more or less intensely at different times.

The scents of individual molecules are hard to describe because they are very complex and perceived differently by everyone. For example, many people perceive Iso E Super as odorless when smelling it directly from the bottle or spraying it on a paper strip. Only on the skin do molecules unfold their unique note, shaped by the wearer’s individual skin chemistry.

Hybrid Molecule Perfumes with Natural Fragrance Ingredients and Synthetic Molecules

Some perfumes combine natural or nature-identical fragrance ingredients with synthetic molecules like Iso E Super, Ambroxan, Cashmeran, and aldehydes. These give the scent woody, citrus, amber, vanilla-like, fruity, or floral nuances and emphasize or intensify other components in the fragrance pyramid. Additionally, these perfumes with natural fragrance ingredients and molecules also highlight the natural scent of the skin, giving each wearer a unique aura.
