Marie Duschek is the founder of dieHaarbanduschi. Marie comes from Fulda, and sewing has been a constant companion since her school days. “As a child, I loved sewing with my grandmother. Since July 2017, I have been happily married to my husband Lennart. Together we have two charming children, Lieselotte and Fritz, and a small Maltipoo named Lilly. In 2019, I had an unfortunate fall and tore a ligament. At first, it was really frustrating, but it gave me time to sew again. Originally, I only wanted to sew hairbands for myself—hairbands that don’t press or slip. But when my friends loved them so much, the idea for dieHaarbanduschi grew. How did the name come about? My dear husband suggested it as a joke, and I was immediately thrilled!

All headbands, hairbands, and scrunchies are sewn in Fulda. “We create jobs for seamstresses who want to earn a little extra as young mothers, single parents, just before retirement, or during retirement. The seamstresses can work flexibly from home. Everything is fair, sustainable, and local in and around Fulda.”

No matter how many trends come and go, headbands and hairbands always seem to be in style. And this has not just been the case recently. The headband has been used as hair jewelry or a functional accessory since ancient times. Hairbands in the Near East kept hair in place, while the laurel wreaths of Roman rulers have deep roots in Greek mythology. Then there are medieval diadems and timeless flower crowns, which are the closest predecessors to today’s headbands and hairbands. Watching old films, you quickly notice that by the mid-20th century, the headband was fully on trend—sometimes classic and simple, sometimes with pearls, sometimes in Rockabilly style. The headband has followed many fashion trends into modern times and, thanks to Coco Chanel and Prada, has even made it onto the world’s most famous runways.
