Douglas Little playfully calls his brand Heretic Parfum the heretic of the perfume industry. A rebel from the mainstream who does not conform to the common ideals of the masses. “Clean beauty has never been so dirty” is the motto of the Los Angeles brand, which is evident from the names of the creations: Dirty Grass, Dirty Vanilla, Dirty Suede.

His fragrances are inspired by olfactory hallucinations he experienced after a robbery in New York, or by the ritual smudging of his apartment with juniper—a way to drive away the bad vibes of his hectic urban lifestyle. Alongside these intense impressions, he naturally also creates perfumes inspired by flowers and plants: Voodoo Lily honors the rare Devil’s Tongue, which blooms only a few days a year and, with its exotic appearance, exudes a hint of the hidden and mysterious. Dirty Coconut is inspired by the legendary Seychelles palm, whose fruits are considered a symbol of fertility. Still, even his gentler scents have a dark twist—shaped by oud, patchouli, pepper, or allspice berries, which give them depth and character.

Douglas Little: The Journey of a Fragrance Visionary

Douglas Little discovered his passion for scents early on: as a child, he received a dollar from his parents every time he recognized the smell of plants like lavender. As a teenager, he took courses in Japanese flower arranging and spent his allowance on rare herbs.

Later, he traveled through Europe as an Art Director for a hair care company and attended perfume courses in Grasse. The city on the southeast coast of France is considered the world capital of perfume and houses the laboratories of renowned perfume houses such as Fragonard, Louis Vuitton, and Christian Dior. In 2003, he founded D.L. & Co., with which he launched high-quality scented candles. After leaving in 2009, he created art installations for brands like Selfridges and Van Cleef & Arpels. A conversation with an industry expert eventually led him to perfume making—despite the skeptical forecast that natural fragrances were too expensive and unstable for the mass market.

In 2015, Little finally founded Heretic Parfum and fully dedicated himself to his vision as a perfumer and creative director. However, his first collection of natural unisex fragrances was unfortunately a flop. Customers were confused by the unusual names and complex scents. Additionally, the concept of natural perfumes was difficult for many to understand, as they mistakenly associated it with traditional, earthy aromas. However, Little wanted to create modern, contemporary fragrances that did not evoke spa experiences or hippie clichés.

After this initial failure, Little realigned, removed the less successful fragrances from the range, and focused on the products that were well received. He then launched the “Dirty” fragrance line in 2017, which became a success and continues to expand steadily with new perfumes today.

“Dirty” scents, clean ingredients

Heretic Parfum relies on natural ingredients to create scents that capture the pure qualities of plants and flowers – from the earth through the stems to the petals. These organic imperfections and natural beauty lead to an authentic fragrance experience that fundamentally differs from conventional synthetic perfumes. Although Heretic Parfum’s creations are “dirty,” they always remain natural, as Little is convinced of nature’s unique sensuality.

With decades of experience, he has perfected the craft of fragrance design and plays a key role with his seven-member team in the movement for natural scents. Heretic Parfum breaks with the status quo and creates a new fragrance landscape: carefully selected, non-GMO plant-based ingredients are dissolved in organic sugarcane alcohol to preserve the Ayurvedic power of the plants. In the studio in Los Angeles, the unisex fragrances are produced in small batches, handcrafted according to old perfume traditions.

Authentic, functional fragrances with aromatherapy benefits

The fragrances themselves are light and transparent on the skin, a refreshing departure from the heavy, chemically enhanced perfumes of the traditional industry. Heretic Parfum consciously avoids chemical additives often used to extend shelf life. Instead, they recommend refreshing the scents regularly throughout the day to maintain their vibrant freshness.

Additionally, Heretic Parfum fragrances are designed as functional scents. The gentle extraction methods of the natural fragrance ingredients ensure that their aromatherapeutic benefits are preserved. The anxiety-relieving effect of sandalwood, the calming power of vanilla, or the invigorating energy of bergamot remain intact and unfold with every scent to promote the well-being of the wearer.

Another exciting element of the brand is layering: wearers are encouraged to apply two to three Heretic Parfum fragrances on top of each other to create a more intense, personalized scent composition. This way, each fragrance becomes a unique experience that expresses the personality and style of each individual. Heretic Parfum invites you to push the boundaries of traditional perfumery and embark on an olfactory journey of discovery.

Heretic Parfums as a Celebrity Insider Tip

After the success of his "Dirty" collection in 2017, Douglas Little was contacted by Gwyneth Paltrow, who had become aware of him through a recommendation from the Goop beauty editor. She was immediately captivated by his fragrances and appreciated their unique quality. Little recalls how Paltrow suggested to him: "Let's create something that smells like church and sex and all those incredible scent notes a perfumer dreams of." From their meeting, a collection of four fragrances was developed specifically for Goop, Gwyneth Paltrow's wellness brand. One of these scents, Church, combines cypress and incense.

Douglas Little also created a fragrance for burlesque artist Dita Von Teese: Scandalwood, a composition of sandalwood, rose, and coriander. Their long-standing friendship is based on their shared passion for the rare and exquisite. Von Teese appreciates his exceptional taste and his ability to create beauty.
