Tango Americano OR/2018 Parfum

David Apel called Tango Americano OR/18 “Cannabis Cupcake” during development. This captures the idea remarkably well, but should not be taken too literally: The fragrance smells neither like a classic cake dessert nor exclusively of cannabis. It combines candied citrus fruits and creamy vanilla with a green, distinctive herbal note.

Blood orange and lemon sugar open the fragrance with a sweet, citrusy character. The impression is less of freshly squeezed juice than of aromatic orange peel with a fine layer of sugar. Star anise immediately adds a spicy, slightly liquorice-like accent and prevents the opening from smelling like an ordinary citrus soda.

The cannabis accord appears at the heart. David Apel describes it as leaning more toward intense rhubarb: green, fresh, herbal, slightly tart, and laced with spices. On the skin, this facet may remain very subtle or become more pronounced. It gives the sweet top note a bitter and somewhat unpredictable counterpoint.

Myrrh adds balsamic warmth, while night-blooming jasmine makes the composition more floral and softer. At this stage, impressions of coffee, dark chocolate, or warm pastries may also emerge.

Vanilla cream and tonka bean shape the later development. The base is sweet and soft, but driftwood and the green cannabis accord make it drier than many pure vanilla or gourmand perfumes. The driftwood recalls weathered wood smoothed by wind and water, giving the drydown a slightly rough surface.

Application

• Spray the eau de parfum from a distance of approximately 15–20 cm onto warm areas of skin such as the neck, wrists, crooks of the arms, or behind the ears.
• Do not rub your wrists together after applying, so that the individual fragrance stages can develop as accurately as possible.
• Start with two to three sprays. Blood orange, lemon sugar, and star anise are more prominent at first, while the cannabis accord, myrrh, vanilla cream, and driftwood become more pronounced over time.
• Perfume often lasts longer on well-moisturized skin. An unscented body moisturizer is best for this.
• Store protected from heat and direct sunlight.
