The Skinny Silk Scrunchies from Holistic Silk are slim silk hair ties made from 100% mulberry silk. They are soft, elastic, and pleasantly light in the hair – ideal for ponytails, buns, half buns, or loosely tied hair.

The smooth surface of the silk helps to reduce friction, pulling, and tangling. This minimizes creases, marks, and hair breakage caused by conventional hair ties. At the same time, the scrunchies provide enough hold to keep the hair securely together without stressing it unnecessarily.

What are the advantages of silk?

What is the difference between different silks?

Silk is a fabric made 100% from natural fibers and has different names depending on the weave, weight, and density. The weight of a woven silk fabric is determined by the thickness of the threads and the type of weave.

The warp threads are the vertical threads in a fabric, and the weft threads are the horizontal threads. Depending on how the loom is set up, i.e., how many warp and weft threads are separated at once, this determines the type of silk fabric produced.

Of the three basic types of silk weave "satin, plain, and twill weave," Holistic Silk prefers the use of satin and plain weaves.

Mulberry silk in satin weave

In the production of satin mulberry silk, four or more weft threads are woven over one warp thread and then four warp threads over a single weft thread. This diagonal floating pattern creates a high-gloss and even shine, hence the name satin. This satin weave and the pure mulberry silk fiber give our mulberry silk the mirror-smooth, friction-free surface that is so good for hair and skin.

Dupion silk (a form of mulberry silk) with plain weave

Dupion silk, used for our lavender eye pillows and classic lavender sleep masks, is made by using fine yarn in the warp and uneven, twisted yarn spun from two or more entwined cocoons in the weft. This weave produces a densely woven silk material with a high-gloss surface. The varying thickness of the silk thread in the weft creates the characteristic bumps and irregularities of dupion, which in turn catch the light and give the material a strikingly royal shimmer and splendor. For an even more stunning effect in dupion silk, the warp and weft fibers can be dyed differently to create a shot effect. This means the color of the fabric can subtly change depending on the viewing angle, giving the fabric an even deeper shimmer and exquisite quality.
