From the clear freshness of white tea to aromatic black tea and bitter mate: We present five niche perfumes that show just how versatile tea can be as a fragrance note.

Tea is one of the most fascinating fragrance notes in modern perfumery. Depending on the composition, it can smell fresh and green, delicate and almost transparent, but also dark, spicy, or wonderfully warm. Sometimes it evokes freshly brewed tea leaves; sometimes it adds just a subtle, slightly bitter nuance to a fragrance.

Right now, as the days grow shorter and cooler, we find these contrasts especially interesting. Black tea meets vanilla and balsamic notes, mate meets supple leather, while white tea unfolds its own distinctive lightness with bergamot and musk.

We've put together five tea perfumes from our selection of niche fragrances that delight us with their diverse interpretations. Five scents that spark curiosity and show how much character a single fragrance note can have.

What does tea smell like in a perfume?

Anyone who discovers tea as a fragrance note in a perfume can look forward to surprises. What sounds like freshly brewed tea leaves can take many different forms on the skin: sometimes bright and almost weightless, sometimes green and aromatic, sometimes dark, with leather, spices, or vanilla.

Especially now in fall, we like the warmer interpretations. Black tea with quince and whiskey, for example. Or bitter mate, which makes a surprisingly good impression alongside citrus and leather. But the lighter versions have their appeal, too.

For this guide, we selected five niche perfumes featuring white, green, and black tea or mate. And each tells a different story.

Five tea perfumes we especially love

1. Liis Ethereal Wave – when tea turns light

Ethereal Wave by Liis shows just how delicate a tea fragrance can be. Bergamot and cardamom create a fresh, subtly spicy opening. White tea and black tea absolute give the composition its gently bitter note, while light woods and musk add a barely perceptible warmth.

What we like about Ethereal Wave is its restraint. Nothing pushes its way to the forefront. Cardamom, in particular, gives the delicate tea note just the right amount of spice.

Fragrance family: Fresh, green, citrusy, aromatic, transparent.

Especially suitable if you like perfumes that don't fill the whole room. Also a wonderful alternative to classic fresh citrus scents.

2. Karolin van Loon Geode – green tea meets fig and soft woods

What does the inside of an agate geode actually smell like? This unusual question was the starting point for Geode, the Extrait de Parfum by Karolin van Loon. The answer: a composition of green tea, fig, aromatic herbs, and soft woods.

Fig and green tea open the fragrance with a fresh, slightly fruity touch. At the heart, basil, rose, and violet bring aromatic and gently floral nuances. Amber, blond cedarwood, and white musk form the warm, powdery base.

Green tea keeps the fig fresh and slightly bitter. Basil in particular gives the fragrance an interesting, almost herbaceous note. Geode evolves very gradually, from green and fruity to soft and warm.

Fragrance family: Powdery, green, woody, fruity.

Geode could be the fragrance for you if you love fig notes but often find purely fruity perfumes too sweet. Green tea and herbs give this composition a pleasantly bitter side.

3. Frau Tonis No. 30 Thé Arabique – black tea, quince, and a hint of whiskey

Black tea, ripe quince, and Irish whiskey – Thé Arabique by Frau Tonis Parfum combines these three unusual fragrance notes in a warm, balsamic composition.

Black tea gives the perfume a dry, aromatic side, while quince and whiskey bring a mellow, fruity warmth. Gurjun balsam, musk, and vanilla make the fragrance soft and full without overpowering the tea note.

Thé Arabique is perfect for the cooler seasons, but it’s not one of those typical heavy vanilla-and-spice fragrances. The slightly bitter black tea note is what sets it apart.

Fragrance family: Amber, spicy, balsamic, vanilla.

A recommendation for lovers of more intense amber and spicy fragrances who prefer less sweetness and an aromatic note.

4. Voyages Imaginaires Tea & Rock’n Roll – Mate with an edge

The name alone sparks curiosity. And indeed, Tea & Rock’n Roll by Voyages Imaginaires is anything but a quiet afternoon tea.

Bergamot and lime create a zesty opening, while mate adds a green, slightly bitter note. Leather and tonka bean gradually warm up the fragrance without completely losing its fresh side.

We especially like this transition. First, the lively freshness, then the more bitter, softer notes. The leather remains pleasantly subtle, leaving plenty of room for the mate.

Fragrance family: Citrusy, green, leathery, aromatic, fresh.

If you love fresh fragrances but are looking for a little more depth, you should try Tea & Rock’n Roll. It’s especially interesting if you like leather in perfumes but don’t want to wear a heavy, dominant leather fragrance.

5. A.N Other FL/2018 – Mate between jasmine and leather

Mate, night-blooming jasmine, saffron, cotton candy, and aged leather – FL/2018 by A.N Other brings together fragrance notes you wouldn’t necessarily expect to find side by side.

The delicate sweetness of cotton candy contrasts with the bitter notes of mate and leather. Jasmine makes the composition floral and soft, while saffron adds a dry, spicy warmth.

These contrasts make FL/2018 intriguing. Depending on which note you notice at any given moment, the fragrance can seem softer and more floral, then spicier and darker.

Fragrance family: Floral, woody, sweet, leathery, spicy.

FL/2018 is especially worth trying if you find classic leather perfumes too austere and sweet fragrances too cloying. It gives both sides room to shine, with mate as a bitter counterpoint.

Which tea fragrance is right for me?

Want to explore tea perfumes? It’s worth paying less attention to the type of tea and more to the other fragrance notes.

Light and understated: Liis Ethereal Wave is the perfect introduction if you enjoy fresh, subtle perfumes.

Green and aromatic: Karolin van Loon Geode combines tea with fig, herbs, and powdery woods. Especially intriguing for lovers of green fragrances.

Warm and spicy: Frau Tonis Thé Arabique combines black tea with quince, whiskey, and balsamic notes. A good companion for cooler days.

Fresh with leather: Voyages Imaginaires Tea & Rock’n Roll opens with a sparkling, green note before the warmer notes come through.

Floral, spicy, and leathery: A.N Other FL/2018 is the right choice if you like contrasts and don’t mind a touch of sweetness.

Our tip: Try two very different interpretations. It’s only when you compare them directly that you realize how much tea can change a perfume’s character.
