Tips for a Gentle Shave & a Well-Groomed Beard
Wet shaving is the first choice for many men – thorough, clean, and classically masculine. It involves using shaving foam, gel, or soap together with a sharp blade to achieve an especially smooth result. Since wet shaving puts more strain on the skin, it is particularly important to use gentle, skin-friendly, and natural products.
Safety Razor
Safety razors are a particularly sustainable alternative to disposable razors and conventional multi-blade razors with replaceable heads. Although the latter may seem more environmentally friendly than disposables at first glance, the replaceable blade heads usually consist of a combination of metal and plastic, which makes recycling difficult. Additionally, the blades in such systems often become dull quickly. This can not only lead to skin irritation and small cuts but also increase the risk of ingrown hairs.
Safety razors typically consist entirely of stainless steel or brass and usually use a single, especially sharp steel blade. This blade stays sharp longer than the blades of conventional systems and needs to be replaced less often. Nowadays, there are also safety razors that can hold up to three blades, which can make the transition from a regular multi-blade razor to a safety razor easier for you.
Although a safety razor may seem more expensive initially, the investment pays off in the long run: the razors are extremely durable, and replacement blades cost only a fraction compared to multi-blade systems. Plus, no plastic waste is generated – a clear advantage for the environment.
Tips for Shaving with a Safety Razor
If you are using a safety razor for the first time, these tips will help make your shave safe and comfortable.
- Take your time: during the first few shaves with a safety razor, you will be a bit slower than with a conventional razor.
- Apply a small amount of shaving gel or lather shaving soap with a brush to prepare the skin well and make shaving easier.
- Hold the safety razor at about a 30-degree angle to the skin. Do not apply extra pressure; the razor glides by its own weight.
- Shave in short, gentle strokes in the direction of hair growth. Use your free hand to gently stretch the skin to create a smooth surface.
- Moisten the skin with warm water as needed to refresh the shaving soap and keep the skin supple.
- After shaving: rinse your face with cold water to close the pores. Then use a mild, soothing toner with natural extracts.
Shaving Soap
Conventional shaving foam from spray cans contains propellants that create foam when dispensed. These aerosols are harmful to the environment and can dry out the skin. Shaving soap is an eco-friendly alternative that works just as well as shaving foam and additionally cares for the skin during shaving. Also, our natural soaps can be used for the entire face.
Shaving soaps prepare the skin especially thoroughly and gently for shaving. By lathering with warm water and a shaving brush, a dense, creamy foam is created. This foam forms a protective layer on the skin and softens the beard hairs. The soap creates a smooth surface that reduces friction between skin and blade. This significantly reduces skin irritation, cuts, and razor burn.
Our natural soaps contain plant oils such as wheat germ, safflower, olive, castor, grape seed oils, or shea butter. These soothe the skin, provide moisture, and prevent dryness already during shaving.
Do You Need Aftershave?
For many men, aftershave is considered indispensable after shaving. The high alcohol content is supposed to disinfect the skin, clean small cuts, and prevent inflammation. However, alcohol also has drawbacks: it can dry out the skin, cause unpleasant burning sensations, and disrupt the natural skin barrier.
Instead, we recommend a mild toner with natural extracts from witch hazel, rosemary, marshmallow, sage, or thyme, which have antibacterial and soothing effects. Toners gently clarify the skin after shaving, act as astringents, and optimally prepare it for subsequent care. Afterward, you can apply a moisturizing serum or a soothing face cream to regenerate, strengthen, and nourish the skin with essential nutrients.
Beard Oil and Pomade
Not every man prefers a clean-shaven look: those who wear a beard should not skip proper care. A high-quality beard oil ensures that the beard stays soft, supple, and healthy. It cares not only for the beard hair but also for the skin underneath, prevents itching, and provides a pleasant scent.
Pomade can tame unruly beard hairs and give the beard a defined shape. It provides hold, structure, and a well-groomed finish, which is a real advantage especially for longer or thicker beards. At the same time, it gives the beard a subtle shine without making it look greasy.
