What is Genmaicha?
Genmaicha tea is a blend of green tea and roasted rice. The combination may sound unusual at first, but it is very popular in Japan and gaining worldwide recognition. The term Genmaicha is a combination of rice (Genmai) and tea (Cha). The origin of the tea can be found in the poorer districts of the country. To stretch the precious green tea, roasted rice was added. This made the tea more affordable and enriched it with additional nutrients. Today, Genmaicha holds a firm place in Japanese tea culture.
What is Genmaicha made of?
The base is green Bancha or Sencha tea. Usually, the later harvests of the year are used, as these leaves contain a mature, grassy, subtly bitter aroma combined with a light sweetness. Together with the roasted rice grains, a very special taste experience is created. The freshness of the green tea paired with nutty, slightly malty flavors and subtle sweetness that arises from the caramelization of puffed rice.
