What are the benefits of silk?

The Chinese have been taking advantage of the beauty benefits of silk for centuries. Friction-free mulberry silk is known to reduce skin and hair damage by up to 50% compared to cotton and is recommended by beauty experts and hairstylists to protect skin and hair.

Silk contains the protein sericin, which mirrors the proteins found in skin and hair. This promotes moisture retention, while naturally hypoallergenic silk reduces wrinkle formation on the face during sleep.

What is the difference between various silks?

Silk is a fabric made 100% from natural fibers and has different names depending on the weave, weight, and density. The weight of a woven silk fabric is determined by the thickness of the threads and the type of weave.

The warp threads are the vertical threads in a fabric, and the weft threads are the horizontal threads. Depending on how the loom is set up, i.e., how many warp and weft threads are separated at once, this determines the type of silk fabric produced.

Of the three basic types of silk weave—satin, plain, and twill weave—Holistic Silk prefers to use satin and plain weaves.

Mulberry silk in satin weave

In the production of satin mulberry silk, four or more weft threads are woven over one warp thread, followed by four warp threads over a single weft thread. This diagonal floating pattern creates a high-gloss, even sheen, hence the name satin. This satin weave and the pure mulberry silk fiber give our mulberry silk the mirror-smooth, friction-free surface that is so good for hair and skin.

Dupion silk (a type of mulberry silk) with plain weave

Dupion silk, used for our lavender eye pillows and classic lavender eye masks, is made by using fine yarn in the warp and uneven, twisted yarn spun from two or more entwined cocoons in the weft. This weave produces a densely woven silk material with a high-gloss surface. The varying thickness of the silk thread in the weft creates the characteristic slubs and irregularities of dupion, which catch the light and give the material a strikingly royal shimmer and splendor. For an even more stunning effect, the warp and weft fibers in dupion silk can be dyed differently to create a shot effect. This means the color of the fabric can appear subtly different depending on the viewing angle, giving the fabric an even deeper shimmer and exquisite quality.

Momme / Thread count

You may know that cotton sheets are often labeled by thread count—momme is the silk equivalent and refers to the number of silk threads per square inch. We use 22 momme because it is smooth and soft yet has a moderate weight. This is the highest weight we can achieve without it becoming stiff. 22 momme silk is light enough to provide an almost weightless, super-smooth feel while being durable enough for daily use—including machine washing. This makes it the perfect choice for many of Holistic Silk’s creations.
