What is the difference between different types of silk?

Silk is a fabric made from 100% natural fibers and has different names depending on its weave, weight, and density. The weight of a woven silk fabric is determined by the thickness of the threads and the type of weave.

The warp threads are the vertical threads in a fabric, while the weft threads are the horizontal threads. Depending on how the loom is set up – that is, how many warp and weft threads are separated at a time – this determines the type of silk fabric produced.

Of the three basic types of silk weave, "satin, plain, and twill weave," Holistic Silk prefers to use satin and plain weaves.

Mulberry silk in a satin weave

When producing satin mulberry silk, four or more weft threads are woven over one warp thread, followed by four warp threads over a single weft thread. This diagonal floating pattern creates a highly lustrous and even sheen, hence the name satin. This satin weave and the pure mulberry silk fiber give our mulberry silk the mirror-smooth, friction-free surface that is so beneficial for hair and skin.

Dupion silk (a form of mulberry silk) with a plain weave

Dupion silk, used for our lavender eye pillows and classic lavender eye masks, is made using fine yarn in the warp and uneven, twisted yarn in the weft, spun from two or more intertwined cocoons. This weave creates a densely woven silk material with a highly lustrous surface. The varying thickness of the silk thread in the weft creates the characteristic slubs and irregularities of dupion, which in turn catch the light and give the material a strikingly regal shimmer and splendor. For an even more dramatic effect with dupion silk, the warp and weft fibers can be dyed different colors to create a shot effect. This means the fabric's color can look subtly different depending on the viewing angle, giving the fabric an even deeper shimmer and an exquisite quality.

You may know that cotton sheets are often described by their thread count – momme is the silk equivalent and refers to the number of silk threads per square inch.

Care instructions:

We recommend hand-washing accessories and eye masks with a gentle detergent for silk or with hair shampoo, then leaving them to air-dry flat. Sleep masks can also be carefully steam-ironed. Please do not press firmly, to avoid flattening the inside of the eye mask.
