• IS WILD-CAUGHT COLLAGEN BETTER FOR YOU?

Wild-caught fish are more likely to have a better nutritional profile than farmed fish due to their natural diet and active lifestyle. Farmed fish are often fed grains or pellets and kept in small enclosures. This can mean that they are at greater risk of disease and are therefore often treated with antibiotics and, in some cases, hormones. Our fish are caught in the wild, are free from hormones and antibiotics, and are sustainably sourced from the North Atlantic.

• WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MARINE AND BOVINE COLLAGEN?

There are several key differences between marine and bovine collagen, which are outlined in our journal article here. Ultimately, marine and bovine collagen are equally effective—the one is not better than the other; it is more a matter of dietary preference and quality. As long as the quality of the supplement is high, the source has no real impact on the benefits you receive.

One of the biggest benefits of marine collagen is its similarity to human collagen. Marine collagen closely resembles the amino acid profile of human collagen. The peptide molecules are also very small, meaning that it may be efficiently absorbed and easily digested, which can be an important factor if you have absorption issues or digestive discomfort. From a dietary perspective, Wild Collagen is ideal for people following a pescatarian or halal diet.

While many studies claim that the main difference between marine and bovine collagen is the type of collagen (e.g. Type 1 or 3), our True Collagen (Bovine) contains only Type 1 peptides—just like our Wild Collagen (Marine). Importantly, Type 1 collagen is the most common type in the body, meaning that it is broken down by the body and contributes effectively to the healing and rebuilding of tissue. Bovine collagen is also free from the 14 major allergens, making it a preferred choice for people with shellfish or fish allergies.

• IS COLLAGEN STILL EFFECTIVE WHEN ADDED TO HOT DRINKS?

The simple answer is: Yes! While this does not mean that collagen is completely indestructible when exposed to heat, it is very stable. According to a study published in the Biophysical Journal, the amount of heat required to destroy collagen is not found in your kitchen. The collagen samples used in the study only began to break down at 300 degrees Celsius—boiling water is only 100 degrees, so your hot drink should make no difference to the peptides.

• WHAT ARE HYDROLYSED PEPTIDES?

Our True Collagen contains hydrolysed collagen peptides, which are a more bioavailable and absorbable form of amino acids, allowing our bodies to use them more easily. Collagen occurs naturally as a very large, complex molecule made up of many long chains of polypeptides. The collagen molecule itself is far too large to be absorbed through the intestinal wall, so it must be broken down during digestion into smaller chains called peptides. Once these peptides have been absorbed, they can contribute to collagen renewal in bones, skin and connective tissue. “Hydrolysed” simply means that the long protein strands are broken down into smaller “peptides” so that we can absorb them more easily. This process is like “predigestion”, making the proteins more bioactive so that we can readily take them up and absorb them to build important tissues.

• WHEN SHOULD I START TAKING COLLAGEN?

We know that the body’s ability to produce collagen begins to decline in the early 20s. From around the age of 40, collagen is thought to break down faster than our bodies can produce it. Therefore, it may be more beneficial to start taking collagen in your early 20s rather than waiting until you are older. But just because you are over 20 does not mean that it is not worth taking it now. Almost everyone can benefit from collagen, regardless of age or condition. If you are in the older age group, meaning over 45, you should increase your daily collagen intake.

• IS COLLAGEN GOOD FOR MENOPAUSE?

Collagen production is closely linked to fluctuations in oestrogen levels, and when oestrogen decreases, collagen production also declines. It is thought that up to 30% of skin collagen may be lost during the first 5 years of menopause. However, supplementation with Type 1 collagen peptides has been shown to stimulate natural collagen production and improve skin elasticity, hydrate the skin, and reduce lines and wrinkles. But collagen offers much more than cosmetic effects—from improved bone density (also an issue during menopause) and better joint health to cardiovascular benefits, it can support the body during such a significant change.

• IS TAKING WILD COLLAGEN DURING PREGNANCY OR BREASTFEEDING SAFE?

You should always consult your doctor or midwife if you are taking new supplements during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Although there are no studies due to the ethical issues involved in researching pregnant women, we are not aware of any contraindications to taking our products during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and they should be well tolerated.

In short: No. Collagen may even be an important tool for maintaining a healthy weight. Collagen is a protein, and it has been scientifically proven to promote a longer-lasting feeling of fullness. It has also been shown to boost metabolism by helping to build lean muscle mass, which in turn helps the body burn calories more efficiently.

• DOES COLLAGEN SURVIVE STOMACH ACID?

Stomach acid plays an important role in breaking down proteins, yet hydrolysed collagen peptides are unlikely to be digested in the stomach at all; instead, they are absorbed in the small intestine. In the small intestine, enzymes work to break down chains of protein molecules, known as peptides, into even shorter peptides and amino acids, which can then be absorbed into the bloodstream. The peptides and amino acids are added to the amino acid pool and stimulate the body to produce new collagen.
