What is plopping?

Do you want to define your curls and give them more volume? Then you should try plopping – the method that gently dries hair and preserves the curl structure. Compared to rubbing with a conventional terry towel, the hair is not roughened, and the curls remain free from frizz and split ends. Incredible, right?

But how exactly does it work? Derived from English, this technique means "to plop," which means "to let fall in." For optimal results, it is recommended to let the hair fall into the towel upside down. This creates a natural look and prevents unnecessary tangling. Then fix everything in a turban on top of the head. This way, the mane dries close to the scalp and gains more bounce. Because without the weight of the hair, the curls cannot stretch out.

Plopping according to the Curly Girl Method

The plopping method became known through the Curly Girl Method by Lorraine Massey.

For gentle hair cleansing, it is recommended to use a conditioner instead of shampoo. This gently cares for and protects the hair. While combing your hair, the conditioner can work in. Then rinse the hair preferably with cold water, as curls do not like heat.

Finally, let the hair hang upside down and gently scrunch a care product for curls into the hair. Suitable care products include flaxseed gel, curl cream, hair oil, or leave-in conditioner. Then dry the hair using the plopping method.

Plopping for gentle hair drying

Before plopping and after washing your hair, it is best to apply a gel first. Without gel, the method is possible, but to achieve a long-lasting result, it helps that the curls do not stretch out again so quickly. Place the damp hair on the head with a towel and make sure it is not stretched by the towel and has enough space not to be flattened.

Ideally, spread the towel on a table or dresser. Let the curls fall upside down onto it and place them in the middle of the longer side of the towel. Then pull the upper half of the towel over the head to the neck area. Now carefully twist the two corners on each side. Bring the two twisted ends to the back of the head and knot them. Simple, right?

How long should I plop my hair?

The time needed for plopping varies depending on hair texture, length, individual hair type, and desired residual moisture. Generally, it is recommended to plop for about 15 to 45 minutes to remove excess moisture. It is also important to consider the right material when choosing a towel. The absorbent and soft bamboo towels from Curly'N'Covered are ideal for gently drying hair and minimizing the risk of frizz.

Is it possible to plop hair overnight in the towel?

Many forums recommend wrapping hair in a towel overnight and letting it dry. However, we advise against this practice. Due to heat and moisture, bacteria can multiply on the scalp, which in the worst case can lead to serious problems.

If you’re in a hurry: Microplopping as an alternative

Microplopping is the alternative to the previously described method. First, comb freshly washed hair with a brush similar to a Tangle Teezer. Then lightly dampen the hair and work in leave-in conditioner. With the bamboo towel, gently press the damp curls and strands upwards. This gradually presses water and conditioner from the hair into the towel,

For fine hair or when curls need more definition and volume, this method can also be done upside down. After microplopping, let the hair air dry (since it is no longer so wet, it won’t stretch out as much), or continue with towel plopping.

Bamboo and silk fabrics are tested for harmful residues. For fabrics that have prolonged direct contact with skin and hair, we place the highest priority on safety. These fabrics are certified according to a widely recognized consumer protection label.

Washing: machine wash at 30 degrees
Drying: not suitable for tumble drying – bamboo products may shrink due to heat sensitivity
Bleaching: do not bleach
Ironing: iron at moderate temperature without steam

All fabrics except silk (bamboo, wax print, polyester) are mostly sourced within the EU.

We source silk fabrics from China. The quality, price, and certification regarding tested harmful residues led us to source our silk from China. Unless otherwise stated in the product description, all silk products use 22 momme silk.

Why is there no consumer protection label on the products?

Consumer protection certifications may only be advertised and labeled if the final product is correctly certified as such. In our case, only the raw materials silk and bamboo are certified, so we are not allowed to sew labels with the corresponding seal onto the products. Furthermore, we are not permitted to name the label explicitly.

As a small startup, Curly'N'Covered currently lacks the resources and financial means to certify the final products. This will be implemented in due course.
