How to Use

• Create your perfect fit quickly and easily.
• It’s roughly like placing a towel on your hair after showering. Start with the shiny silk side on dry hair, place one end of the gathered elastic band at the nape, and tuck your hair inside.
• Now twist the front part twice tightly against your forehead and pull it back over your head so that the other elastic end also rests at the nape.
• The double twist allows the friction-free side of the silk on the inside to do its work while still looking stunning on the outside.

What is the difference between various silks?

Silk is a 100% natural fiber fabric and has different names depending on weave, weight, and density. The weight of a woven silk fabric is determined by the thickness of the threads and the type of weave.

The warp threads are the vertical threads in a fabric, and the weft threads are the horizontal threads. Depending on how the loom is set up—that is, how many warp and weft threads are separated at once—this determines the type of silk fabric produced.

Of the three basic types of silk weave—satin, plain, and twill—weave—Holistic Silk prefers the use of satin and plain weaves.

Mulberry silk in satin weave

In producing satin mulberry silk, four or more weft threads are woven over one warp thread, followed by four warp threads over a single weft thread. This diagonal floating pattern creates a highly glossy and even sheen, hence the name satin. This satin weave and the pure mulberry silk fiber give our mulberry silk the mirror-smooth, friction-free surface that is so good for hair and skin.

Dupion silk (a form of mulberry silk) with plain weave

Dupion silk, used for our lavender eye pillows and classic lavender eye masks, is made by using fine yarn in the warp and uneven, twisted yarn spun from two or more entwined cocoons in the weft. This weave produces a densely woven silk material with a highly glossy surface. The varying thickness of the silk thread in the weft creates the characteristic slubs and irregularities of dupion, which catch the light and give the material a strikingly royal shimmer and splendor. For an even more stunning effect, the warp and weft fibers in dupion silk can be dyed differently to create a shot effect. This means the fabric’s color can subtly change depending on the viewing angle, giving the fabric an even deeper shimmer and exquisite quality.

Momme / Thread count

You may know that cotton sheets are often labeled by thread count—momme is the silk equivalent and refers to the number of silk threads per square inch. We use 22 momme because it is smooth and soft yet has a moderate weight. This is the highest weight we can achieve without it becoming stiff. 22 momme silk is light enough to provide an almost weightless, super-smooth feel while being durable enough for daily use—including machine washing. This makes it the perfect choice for many Holistic Silk creations.
