Natural Cosmetic Facial Oil: How to Find the Right Oil for Your Skin Type

Whether for normal, oily, or dry skin – facial oils are available for every skin type. With their unique blend of nutrients and vitamins, these luxurious beauty oils are a true treat for your skin. Unlike creams, pure facial oils are water-free and contain no synthetic fragrances or alcohols, only plant-based active ingredients that nourish and balance our skin. We’ll show you how to find the right oil for your skin type here!

Mirror, mirror on the wall, which face is the fairest of them all? Beauty is, of course, in the eye of the beholder. The most effective care for radiant skin is surprisingly natural: facial oil – for every skin type and age. Probably the oldest form of skincare has been enjoying a well-deserved revival in recent years. Valuable natural active ingredients, antioxidants, saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, a variety of vitamins, and secondary plant substances are very well absorbed by our skin and make the complexion appear fresher.

But which facial oil is right for me? With so many beautiful facial oils, it’s easy to lose track – it’s high time to get an overview.

      A Few Basics First

The concern that facial oils might leave a greasy film or clog pores is unfounded. Lighter oils absorb quickly and have a balancing effect – even on oily and blemished skin. Always apply facial oils to slightly damp skin or mix them with a serum. The oil forms an emulsion with the moisture, locking in hydration and optimally delivering active ingredients into the skin. Suitable for daily care, morning and evening.

What does the comedogenicity of oils mean? Comedogenic comes from the Latin term for blackheads, “Comedo.” Comedogenicity refers to “the property of promoting the formation of comedones in the ducts of sebaceous gland follicles,” or simply put, clogging pores. Oils have different comedogenicity levels and can thus be matched to different skin types. Mature and dry skin can tolerate comedogenic oils well, while combination skin may react problematically even to slightly comedogenic oils. The scale ranges from 0 to 5, where 0 means non-comedogenic and 5 means highly comedogenic.

Levels 0-1: Oils that do not clog pores and are therefore well suited for oily and blemished skin. Level 2: slightly comedogenic oils that do not cause blemishes on normal to dry skin, can still be tried on combination skin, but should be avoided by acne-prone skin. Levels 3-5: medium to highly comedogenic oils that can strongly clog pores of combination and blemished skin but can work wonders for moisture on very dry and mature skin.

      Facial Oils for Normal Skin

Normal skin is characterized, among other things, by its simplicity. Sebum production is balanced – the skin is neither oily nor dry. It neither feels tight nor shiny but feels healthy and supple. The complexion is even – redness, blackheads, or pimples rarely occur. People with normal skin usually do not need special care products. A gentle facial cleanser used morning and evening is usually sufficient. Then apply a toner that refreshes and hydrates the skin. Finish with a face cream or a suitable facial oil gently massaged into the skin. However, with increasing age, normal skin tends to become dry and then requires more intensive care. Suitable oils include argan oil, prickly pear oil, wild rose oil, marula oil, or apricot kernel oil.

      Facial Oils for Dry Skin

The hallmark of dry skin is a constant feeling of tightness. The skin is thin, fine-pored, and has little shine. Due to the lack of fat in the form of sebum, it cannot maintain its natural protective barrier and therefore reacts sensitively to temperature changes and other environmental influences. Dry skin is often brittle and slightly cracked – it can also itch occasionally. This skin type needs a lot of care. It is important to choose products with few ingredients and no synthetic dyes, fragrances, or alcohol. For facial cleansing, use only gentle cleansers that provide both moisture and fat to the skin. The right water temperature also plays a role. Very warm or hot water further stresses the acid mantle and should be avoided. After cleansing, apply a serum, moisturizing products like a face cream, and/or a rich oil. Suitable plant oils include argan oil, evening primrose oil, pomegranate oil, coconut oil, almond oil, avocado oil, macadamia nut oil, plum kernel oil, or sea buckthorn oil.

      Facial Oils for Sensitive Skin

The transition from dry to sensitive skin is often fluid. This skin type often lacks natural and protective fats as well as moisture. Sensitive skin reacts quickly to environmental influences and temperature changes and tends to irritation, inflammation, redness, and flaking. Allergic reactions due to inappropriate cleansing and care products as well as vascular dilation can also occur. Depending on severity, a visit to a dermatologist is advisable. Special attention should definitely be paid to the ingredients of cleansing, care products, and cosmetics. Optimal care considers both dryness and sensitivity equally. Substances like alcohol or strong fragrances are best avoided altogether. Instead, rely on organic care products and organic cosmetics with soothing active ingredients that strengthen the skin’s protective barrier. Well-suited oils include apricot kernel oil, almond oil, camellia seed oil, avocado oil, tamanu oil, borage seed oil, or sea buckthorn oil.

Facial Oils for Oily and Blemished Skin

Oily or blemished skin is usually genetic but can also be caused by hormonal fluctuations, stress, or poor-quality cosmetics. In this skin type, the sebaceous glands are overactive. Because the skin produces disproportionately much oil, pores become clogged. This creates an ideal breeding ground for bacteria, which in turn cause inflammation of the sebaceous glands, leading to pimples and blackheads. The complexion is usually large-pored – the surface often covered with a moist or oily film. Because the top skin layer is often poorly supplied with blood, the face often looks dull.

To keep pores clear and prevent bacterial growth, thorough but gentle cleansing is important. Aggressive cleansers, washing too often, or vigorous rubbing have a negative effect and should be avoided. It is recommended to wash the face morning and evening with a pH-neutral cleanser. Then ideally use a toner with mild disinfecting properties. To remove dead skin cells, a facial scrub used once or twice a week is suitable. Finally, restore moisture to the skin with a water-based serum, a light moisturizer, or an organic facial oil. In any case, this skin type should pay attention to the right comedogenicity – that is, use products that do not clog pores further. The following oils are well suited for this skin type: tamanu oil, safflower oil, hemp oil, jojoba oil, grape seed oil, or sunflower oil.

      Facial Oils for Combination Skin

Combination skin is a mix of the previous skin types. Both moist-oily areas and normal to dry areas appear. Usually, the T-zone, i.e., forehead, nose, and chin, is oily and shiny. In these areas, the same symptoms as oily skin appear. Also, blemishes occur more frequently in the oily areas of the face. The skin on the cheeks is normal or dry and may feel slightly tight. Small dilated blood vessels (couperose) can also form on the cheek area. With increasing age, combination skin tends to become dry.

Because of the very different skin areas, combination skin requires differentiated care. It is best to wash the face with a gentle cleansing gel or foam and lukewarm water. Then treat the oily facial areas with a clarifying toner. A facial scrub should also be used once or twice a week. During the day, a moisturizing facial care that is not too rich is recommended. If the differences between skin areas are pronounced, a richer care product can also be used additionally for the dry areas. Here is a selection of suitable natural cosmetic oils for this skin type: grape seed oil, cacay oil, hazelnut oil, jojoba oil, black cumin oil, or sunflower oil.

      Facial Oils for Mature Skin

Skin components in the dermis such as collagen fibers and elastic fibers weaken with age, and skin elasticity decreases. The subcutaneous fat also decreases, which can make blood vessels more visible. With increasing age, the skin’s moisture content decreases. Sebum and sweat gland production decline, and the skin binds less moisture. The result is drier skin with increasing wrinkle formation. Overall, the skin looks duller, becomes thinner, and develops age spots (benign pigment accumulations).

Mature skin is usually also dry skin. Mild and replenishing cleansers with a low pH value are a good choice. Especially balms and cleansing creams with a high fat content are recommended. The task of facial care is to restore moisture to dry skin. A moisturizing day cream and a rich night cream are a good combination. The number of cell divisions is particularly high at night. This allows nutrients and vital substances to support the skin’s regeneration processes especially effectively. The skin around the eyes and the front of the neck are particularly prone to wrinkles and therefore need special attention. Suitable facial oils include avocado oil, evening primrose oil, macadamia nut oil, sea buckthorn oil, cacay oil, or wild rose oil.

Facial Oil for Every Skin Type

Facial oils can visibly improve the complexion and promote skin elasticity. Every skin type can benefit – whether normal, mature, dry, sensitive, or oily combination skin. When choosing, pay attention to the ingredients to combine the oil appropriately with your daily care. Thanks to their rich texture, facial oils are also excellent as a sole care product.

      High-Quality Oils for Your Face

The range of facial oils is huge – from neutral to exotic and nutty to soothing fragrance notes. However, quality is decisive. Facial skin especially benefits from natural oils without questionable additives. Our range offers only high-quality cold-pressed natural cosmetic facial oils, many of them certified organic. We focus on plant-based, natural ingredients and consistently avoid synthetic additives.

Facial Oil as Universal Care for Your Face

Facial oils are nutrient-rich care products that are also very suitable for special skin needs. For example, they can care for dry skin areas or support skin that needs extra nutrients. Thanks to easy absorption, they integrate well into the daily routine and can contribute to a refined complexion and fresher skin tone.

When choosing the right product, the skin condition is decisive. If the skin tends to blemishes, care should be taken to choose the right oil to avoid the risk of causing pimples and blackheads. Mature skin needs a rich care oil. There is also the right natural cosmetic facial oil in our range for oily, dry, sensitive skin. Do you have questions or need advice? We look forward to your inquiry.
